Babies & Children

Many spinal problems seen in adults begin as early as birth. Even natural birthing methods can stress an infant’s spine and developing nervous system.

Chiropractic Care for Babies & Children

The resulting irritation to the spine and nervous system caused by spinal and cranial dysfunction may be associated with newborn health complaints such as colic, reflux, irritable baby syndrome, sleeping difficulties, torticollis, asymmetrical head shape, breast feeding difficulties, attachment and sucking problems, developmental delay and retained primitive reflexes.

When to Check a Child’s Spine and Cranium

  • Firstly at birth then periodically during the first year depending on the infant. During this time, there are important milestones in their spinal and neurological development.
  • During childhood, three to four times per year but especially after any trauma, during growth spurts, or if the child is regularly ill. This can indicate a weakened immune and nervous system.
  • There are many symptoms such as unusual crying, poor appetite, ear infections or erratic sleeping habits can be signs of spinal distress.
  • If a child complains of pain, or develops a limp or an altered walk ie; one foot turning inward or outward. These are strong indications of spinal problems and are important not leave unattended as can lead to more severe spinal issues in adulthood.
  • During a childs preschool years is a time where numerous traumas can occur. These may affect the spinal function of the growing child.

How a Chiropractor Can Help Your Baby

It is important to understand that the expertise of the chiropractor is in checking the child’s spine for areas of dysfunction that interfere with nervous system function therefore affecting overall body function.

The nervous system controls and co-ordinates the function of all the systems in the body: circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, eliminative and immune systems. Significant spinal trauma can occur during the birth process – both vaginal and caesarean section, even natural child birth can affect an infant’s spine. Chiropractic care offers a gentle approach to restore proper function to the spine and cranium.
