It doesn’t occur to many people to seek chiropractic care while pregnant, but there are many benefits for Mother and baby. If you are healthy in pregnancy, you’re more likely to have a good labour and a happier baby.
Chiropractic care for the expectant mother helps to maintain a well functioning spine and good muscle and ligament balance. During pregnancy, the mother’s spine and pelvis undergo many changes and adaptations to compensate for the growing baby. These adaptations increase the risk of musculoskeletal problems and subsequent interference to the nervous system.
As the abdomen grows forward, it pulls the lower back with it, the mid back and shoulders then pull back to compensate, and in turn, the head and neck tilt forward. In addition to these postural compensations, the pregnant mother’s body produces several hormones (the main one being relaxin) to help the spine cope with some of these alterations by loosening the surrounding connective tissues.
Due to all these changes, if a minor spinal problem exists in the spine prior to pregnancy, it will typically intensify during the pregnancy. This makes it vital for a woman to maintain the integrity of her spine before and throughout her pregnancy.
